History of Philadelphia, PA


The first European settlers in the area that is now Philadelphia were Swedish immigrants. They founded the colony of New Sweden in 1638, and established a thriving community on the banks of the Delaware River. In 1655, the Dutch conquered the colony and renamed it New Netherland. The English took control of the area in 1664, and renamed it Philadelphia after the Greek city of brotherly love. William Penn, an English Quaker, founded the Pennsylvania colony in 1681 as a place where people of all religions could worship freely. Penn envisioned Philadelphia as a "city upon a hill" - a shining example of religious tolerance and prosperity.


The city grew rapidly under Penn's leadership, and by 1750 it was the largest city in the American colonies. Philadelphia was a center of the Patriot cause during the American Revolution, and served as the capital of the United States from 1790 to 1800. The city continued to grow in the 19th century, and became an important industrial center. The 20th century brought further growth, as well as social and political turmoil.


Philadelphia today is a vibrant city with a rich history and a bright future. It is home to some of the country's most important historical sites, as well as world-class museums, restaurants, and cultural attractions. Philadelphia is also a major center of education and business, and is known for its friendly and diverse population.


Philadelphia is  truly a city of firsts. It was the site of the first Continental Congress in 1774, the first public museum in America (the Philadelphia Museum of Art), and the first American mint. The city is also home to the Liberty Bell, an iconic symbol of American freedom.
